As a small boy growing up in Caracas, Venezuela, Migel Diaz was mesmerized by his ability to capture the likeness of his favorite subjects on paper. He spent countless hours sketching his pets, his family and friends, and the animals at the family ranch in rural Venezuela. This passion for sketching led Mikel to work on perfecting his drawing skills under the guidance of the Uruguayan illustrator and portrait artist, Antonio Galeandro. He subsequently joined the studio of Maestro Pedro Centeno Vallenilla, one of the most prestigious artists of the visual arts in modern Venezuela.

After moving to the United States, Migel became a fixture in Virginia’s horse country. Before long, he was painting commissioned portraits of horses, riders, and fox hounds. Migel enjoyed the guidance and mentorship of the late Peter Von Artens, whose techniques and work continues to inspire Migel Diaz’s elegant still life compositions, particularly the orchids in bloom and objects reflecting on polished surfaces.

“I am striving to create enduring art: art that is timeless, that could be appreciated and enjoyed by your grandparents, as well as your grandchildren’s grandchildren, and that transcends fad or fashion...In short, art that makes a connection not just with your head, but also with your heart.”

Migel considers himself part of the South American School of Hyper-Realism that includes Peter Von Artens, Claudio Bravo, Renato Mezzeat, and others. Migel has studied and follows closely the techniques employed by the classic European masters. He enjoys mixing the techniques of the old school with the style of the South American realists – combining the best of both worlds.

Migel’s work has been exhibited in Caracas, Puerto Rico, Miami, Atlanta, Toronto, New York, Boston, Chicago, and ‘closer to home’ in Virginia and his work has been published in regional and national magazines.
